Vrindavan Parikrama: The Sacred 12 km Walk Around Krishna's Eternal Abode
Tulsimalastore StoreShare
There is a walk unlike any other on earth. A walk that saints, sadhus, kings, and ordinary devotees have been making for thousands of years. A walk where every barefoot step on the sacred soil of Vrindavan is an act of worship, every breath of the Braj air is prasadam, and every glimpse of a temple spire or forest grove is a darshan of the divine. This is the Vrindavan Parikrama.
What is Vrindavan Parikrama?
Parikrama (also called pradakshina) means circumambulation — walking around a sacred object or place in a clockwise direction as an act of devotion. The Vrindavan Parikrama Marg is approximately 12 kilometres (8 miles) in circumference, encircling the entire sacred town of Vrindavan.
According to the Vaishnava scriptures, performing Vrindavan Parikrama is equivalent to circumambulating the entire universe, as Vrindavan is considered the topmost holy place in all of creation.
The Route: What You Pass on Vrindavan Parikrama
The parikrama path winds through some of the most sacred spots in all of Braj:
- 📿 Keshi Ghat — Starting point for most pilgrims; the famous ghat on the Yamuna where Krishna slew the Keshi demon
- 📿 Imli Tala — Ancient tamarind tree where Rupa Goswami sat and composed Vaishnava literature
- 📿 Kaliya Ghat — Where Krishna danced on the heads of the Kaliya serpent
- 📿 Seva Kunj — The sacred grove of the Maharaas; considered especially holy after sunset
- 📿 Nidhivan — The mysterious forest where Radha and Krishna are said to perform the Raas Lila every night
- 📿 Banke Bihari Temple — A darshan stop on the parikrama route
- 📿 Radha Damodara Temple — Home of the Six Goswamis' samadhis
- 📿 Loi Bazar — The vibrant market area where pilgrims purchase Tulsi Mala, kanthi, and devotional items
How to Do Vrindavan Parikrama
- 🌅 Start early — Begin at or before sunrise, ideally from Keshi Ghat
- 🦶 Walk barefoot — The sacred soil of Vrindavan is itself an object of worship
- 📿 Chant continuously — Keep your Tulsi Mala in hand and chant the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra throughout the walk
- 🙏 Offer dandavats (prostrations) at major temples along the route
- 💪 Duration — The full parikrama takes 3–5 hours depending on your pace and darshan stops
- 🌼 Best months — October to March; avoid summer months (April–June) due to intense heat
The Spiritual Significance of Each Step
The scriptures declare that the dust of Vrindavan is so sacred that merely touching it to one's forehead grants spiritual merit beyond calculation. Walking the entire parikrama while chanting the Holy Names is considered one of the greatest acts of devotion a pilgrim can perform.
Srila Rupa Goswami walked this parikrama daily. Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu wept tears of ecstasy on this very path. Every step you take on the Vrindavan parikrama, you walk in the footsteps of the greatest devotees in history.
