The Master of Devotional Literature

Sri Rupa Goswami (1489-1564) stands as one of the most influential saints in Vrindavan's history. A direct disciple of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, he was entrusted with the mission of establishing the theological foundations of Gaudiya Vaishnavism and uncovering the lost holy places of Vrindavan.

From Minister to Mendicant

Born into a wealthy family and serving as a minister in the court of Hussain Shah, Rupa Goswami renounced everything upon meeting Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. He distributed his vast wealth to brahmanas, Vaishnavas, and his relatives, keeping only a small portion for emergencies, demonstrating perfect detachment.

His Sacred Work in Vrindavan

Rupa Goswami spent decades in Vrindavan living under trees, writing devotional literature, and rediscovering sacred sites. His contributions include:

• Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu – The ocean of the nectar of devotion, systematizing the science of bhakti
• Ujjvala-nilamani – Describing the conjugal love between Radha and Krishna
• Laghu-bhagavatamrita – A summary of devotional philosophy
• Numerous plays and poems glorifying Krishna's pastimes

The Radha-Govinda Temple

Rupa Goswami discovered the deity of Govinda Dev, one of Vrindavan's most important deities. Though the original temple was later moved, the site remains a powerful place of pilgrimage, marking where Rupa Goswami had divine visions of Krishna's pastimes.

Teachings on Pure Devotion

Rupa Goswami taught that pure devotional service (uttama-bhakti) is:

• Free from material desires
• Unmixed with karma (fruitive work) and jnana (speculative knowledge)
