Raghunatha Das Goswami: The Saint of Intense Renunciation
Share
The Embodiment of Vairagya
Sri Raghunatha Das Goswami (1495-1571) represents the pinnacle of renunciation and devotional intensity in Vrindavan's spiritual history. His life demonstrates that true spiritual advancement requires complete detachment from material enjoyment and total absorption in Krishna consciousness.
From Wealth to Renunciation
Born into an extremely wealthy family, Raghunatha Das had everything material life could offer. Yet his heart yearned only for the association of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. After several attempts, he finally escaped his family's luxurious home and surrendered to Mahaprabhu in Puri.
Mahaprabhu placed him under the care of Svarupa Damodara, and after Mahaprabhu's departure, Raghunatha Das went to Vrindavan to serve under Rupa and Sanatana Goswamis.
Extreme Austerity in Vrindavan
In Vrindavan, Raghunatha Das Goswami practiced unprecedented austerities:
- He gradually reduced eating to once every three days, then once a week
- He slept only one and a half hours daily
- He performed 64 rounds of japa meditation daily on his Tulsi beads
- He offered thousands of obeisances to the deities and Vaishnavas
- He lived at Radha Kund, the most sacred place in Vrindavan
Literary Contributions
Despite his intense austerities, Raghunatha Das composed beautiful devotional poetry:
- Stavavali – A collection of prayers expressing intense longing for Krishna
- Manah-shiksha – Instructions to the mind on devotional practice
- Mukta-charita – Describing the glories of devotional service
His writings reveal a soul burning with separation from Krishna, the highest stage of devotional love.
Life at Radha Kund
Raghunatha Das spent his final years at Radha Kund, living in a small cave and absorbed in meditation on Radha and Krishna's pastimes. He would circumambulate Govardhana Hill and bathe in Radha Kund, places most sacred to Krishna's devotees.
His Teachings
Raghunatha Das taught that:
- Attachment to material things is the greatest obstacle to devotion
- Association with advanced devotees is essential
- Constant chanting and remembrance of Krishna is the path to perfection
- Service to Radha Kund and Govardhana Hill is supremely auspicious
Follow His Path of Devotion
While we may not practice such extreme renunciation, we can follow Raghunatha Das Goswami's example through regular japa meditation. Our Tulsi malas from Vrindavan support your daily practice, connecting you to the same sacred tradition.
Each mala is handcrafted near Radha Kund and blessed in Vrindavan temples, carrying the spiritual energy of the land where Raghunatha Das performed his bhajan.
"O mind! Worship the dust of Radha Kund with great eagerness, for it surpasses the Ganges a million times in its power to grant pure love for the Divine Couple." - Raghunatha Das Goswami
