Sri Raghunatha Bhatta Goswami (1505-1579) was one of the Six Goswamis of Vrindavan, renowned for his melodious recitation of Srimad Bhagavatam and his expertise in deity worship. His life demonstrates how devotional service can be expressed through beautiful arts dedicated to Krishna.
Blessed by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
Born in a brahmin family in Bengal, Raghunatha Bhatta had the great fortune of serving Chaitanya Mahaprabhu when Mahaprabhu stayed at his home for several months. Even as a young boy, he cooked for Mahaprabhu with such love that Mahaprabhu would relish every preparation.
Mahaprabhu blessed him and instructed him to go to Vrindavan to serve under Rupa Goswami, which he did after completing his studies.
Master of Bhagavatam Recitation
Raghunatha Bhatta became famous throughout Vrindavan for his enchanting recitation of Srimad Bhagavatam. His voice was so sweet and his devotion so deep that listeners would be moved to tears. He would recite the Bhagavatam daily, bringing the pastimes of Krishna to life through his heartfelt presentation.
Devotees would gather from all over Vrindavan to hear him recite, experiencing the nectar of Krishna's pastimes through his devotional rendering.
Expert in Deity Worship
Raghunatha Bhatta was also known for his meticulous and loving deity worship. He established the worship of Radha-Govinda and served the deities with such care and devotion that his standards became a model for others.
He prepared elaborate offerings for the deities, using his culinary skills learned while serving Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Every detail of his worship reflected his love for Radha and Krishna.
