There is Holi, and then there is Lathmar Holi in Barsana. While the world celebrates Holi with colours and water, the sacred land of Braj erupts into a devotional festival that has been celebrated for over five thousand years — rooted in the eternal pastimes of Radha and Krishna.
In 2027, Lathmar Holi in Barsana and Nandgaon falls in March, and it is an experience that every devotee and spiritual traveller must witness at least once in their lifetime.
What is Lathmar Holi?
Lathmar Holi (lath = stick, maar = to strike) re-enacts the legendary pastime where Krishna and his friends from Nandgaon visited Barsana to play Holi with Radharani and the gopis. The gopis, in playful retaliation, chased the men with sticks (lathis) while the men tried to shield themselves with shields.
Today, women of Barsana playfully beat men from Nandgaon with decorated lathis as the men shield themselves, all while the air is thick with gulal (coloured powder), chanting, and the sound of "Jaya Radhe! Jaya Radhe!"

Phoolon ki Holi: Holi with Flowers in Vrindavan
One of the most breathtaking events of the Braj Holi season is Phoolon ki Holi at the Banke Bihari Temple in Vrindavan. Priests shower thousands of devotees with fragrant flower petals — marigolds, roses, and jasmine — in a spectacle of colour, fragrance, and devotion that leaves every participant in tears of joy.
The Spiritual Heart of Braj Holi
In the Vaishnava tradition, Holi in Braj is not merely a festival — it is a lila (divine pastime). Every splash of colour, every note of kirtan, every shower of flowers is an offering to Radha and Krishna. Participating in Braj Holi, even from afar, connects the devotee to this eternal stream of divine love.
Wearing a Vrindavan Tulsi Mala during your Holi prayers and kirtan is a beautiful way to anchor yourself in the devotional spirit of Braj, keeping the sacred energy of Vrindavan close to your heart even if you cannot be there in person.
